About the Team
Menlo girls’ tennis advanced to the NorCal Championships for the fourth time in seven seasons. The young Knights crew wrapped up the season with a remarkable 23-6 record, featuring a trip to the NorCal and CCS championships matches.
The Knights captured a 26th consecutive league championship after finishing the season undefeated in league in 2019. The Knights kept alive a streak of league dual-match wins that covered 24 seasons, and the Knights captured the trifecta with NorCal, CCS, and league crowns while compiling a 26-3 overall record. Menlo School’s tennis program consistently finishes in the top six of the Central Coast Section.
Menlo won back-to-back CCS and CIF-Northern California championships in 2014 and 2015. The Knights claim 100 CCS titles and won four Northern California titles in a row from 1998-2001. Menlo holds the CCS record for consecutive wins 92 straight from 1996-2000.
The Coach
Shine has been the coach of the girls’ and boys’ teams at Menlo School since 1995. During that time, his teams won a combined 25 Central Coast Section titles.
No other coach in San Mateo County history has been so successful. In 2018, Shine was inducted into the Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame. He also reached his 1,000th win that season. In 2021, he was selected to the United States Tennis Association NorCal Hall of Fame.
As a junior player, Shine earned a top-10 ranking every year from 1962 to 1973. He was a four-time MVP at Los Altos High and a two-time CCS singles finalist. Shine was part of the CCS champion doubles team in 1971. In college at the University of Louisiana, Lafayette, Shine was named first-team all-conference in 1975 and 1976.
